Any jazz musician is welcome to perform, regardless of experience, and will be guaranteed a warm response. Resident trio: Mike Gordon (piano), Bob Walker (bass) and Dennis Hitch, will accompany anyone who wishes to play or sing. Alternatively individuals or groups may prefer to provide their own backing. Ring Mike (01723) 379818 to discuss sitting in – or just turn up. 11 June Dylan Howe's Unity 4 This new improvising group is led by the amazing drummer Dylan Howe and comprises some of the most talked about and talented musicians in the UK: BBC jazz award winner Tony Kofi, (Alto Saxophone - remember his incredible performance at the last Scarborough Jazz Festival?), Mike Outram (Guitar – ‘world class credentials’ The Guardian) and Ross Stanley (Hammond Organ – ‘fast becoming one of Britain's best jazz pianists and organists’ Jazzwise). This is the band’s first major tour. They will be playing music from legendary Hammond organist Larry Young's brilliant Blue Note album 'Unity' as well as beautiful music from Ornette Coleman, Pat Metheny, Steve Lacy and the Great American songbook. £6 (£5 in advance) 18 June Thom Whitworth Thom has quickly become one of the most popular performers at Scarborough Jazz. A brilliant trumpeter he is equally versatile on the guitar and has a great rapport with his audiences. Thom is now well known on the jazz festival and club scene. His influences are diverse and include musicians such as Clifford Brown, Chet Baker and Pat Metheney. His trumpet playing covers a huge emotional and dynamic range with a strong clear tone and finely honed technique. Backed by The Mike Gordon Trio (MG3) 25 June Sarah Littlefield Sara Littlefield has a truly individual voice on the tenor saxophone. Her sound is packed with real warmth and soulfulness but she has the daring and unexpected turn of phrase of the true improviser. Her charm makes contact with listeners both when she solos and introduces numbers. She is greatly inspired by players such as Dewey Redman, Keith Jarrett, Joe Lovano and Sonny Rollins. MG3 2 July Sean Hollis Sean is a confident and fluent jazz trumpet improviser. His influences include Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan and Wynton Marsalis and he has a great ability to move across a number of genres. He encompasses a wide range of styles ranging from 'New Orleans' to the more modern 'Blue Note' style of the 60's. Sean has always had an interesting repertoire. He plays mainly ballads and bop but he may throw in a little traditional jazz. MG3 9 July Rob Lavers U.K tenor and soprano saxophonist, flautist and composer, Rob Lavers, has experience in many different styles of music also and has collaborated with musicians from Spain, Africa and India. ‘Sax player and flautist Rob Lavers is a well-travelled session player, with countless live and studio dates under his belt … Rob’s rich tone on tenor is perfectly complemented by the ethereal sweetness of his flute playing, and his soprano work is beautifully assured on this most stubborn of the saxes - his sound is very definitely his own.’ (MCPS) MG3 16 July Paul Towndrow Quartet Still in his twenties, the career of award winning alto and soprano saxophonist, Paul Towndrow, has skyrocketed since his recent success at The World Saxophone Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival. The last few years have seen him headline at renowned jazz festivals including Brecon, Cheltenham, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as performances across Europe. Paul has star support with Steve Hamilton (Piano), Alyn Cosker (Drums) and Mike Janisch (Bass) ‘Paul Towndrow - write that name down because it’s going to be a big one!’ Humphrey Lyttleton ‘A turbo-charged amalgam of all your saxophone heroes’ The Guardian £6 (£5 in advance) 23 July Chris Hodgkins ‘Chris Hodgkins’ trumpet playing? It’s an intriguing but entirely convincing meld of stylistic influences in which you can regularly spot echoes of Miles, Sweets, Clark, Chet, Cootie, Roy, Louis, Ruby and our very own (and very dear) Humphrey Lyttelton … Chris is basically a fine trumpet player; listen to the technical control which allows him to play a melody ‘straight’; to his unwavering long notes; to his control in the trumpet’s demanding lower register.’ Great compliments from leading trumpeter and broadcaster Digby Fairweather. MG3 30 July Duncan Eagles Trio Following jazz study at the leading music conservatoire, Trinity College of Music, saxophonist Duncan Eagles won the Spike Robinson Saxophone Award at age nineteen and is quickly making his mark on the London jazz scene and around Europe. His gigs have included Ronnie Scotts, the 606 Club and the Cheltenham International Jazz Festival along side some of the top names of jazz including Dave O’Higgins, John Etheridge, Roy Babbington, and Mornington Lockett. With Jon Harvey (Bass), and Louie Palmer (Drums), Duncan will play some originals and some arrangements of standards. And it’s free! 6 July Jamie Taylor Bop-influenced guitarist Jamie Taylor maintains a busy performing career and has worked with leading UK musicians such as Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen, Steve Brown, and F-IRE Collective's Carlos Lopez-Real. In the field of popular music he has contributed to projects involving Mercury Music Prize nominee Richard Hawley, and Leeds-based Indie band ‘The Pigeon Detectives’. Jamie is Course Leader for Jazz at Leeds College of Music. His group ‘Java’ (with acclaimed pianist Jamil Sheriff) has recently completed a new album. A very classy guitarist! MG3 13 August Matt Smith You’ll hear strains of Sonny Rollins, Tim Whitehead, Miles Davis, Keith Jarret, Ben Webster and John Coltrane at this gig but you will also hear the very individual saxophone sound of the talented Matt Smith - a creative and versatile saxophonist who is building up a tremendous reputation on the jazz scene. Apart from jazz Matt has played many musical styles - Soul, Blues, Pop and Big Band – and has recorded sessions for BBC Television and Radio, Channel 4 and Sky Television and several recording studios. Swinging Hull drummer Keith Stutt is with MG3. 20 August Sally Doherty Quartet ‘ … an excellent band and faultless intonation and taste from Sally herself, sounding equally at home in Portuguese, Spanish and English … The singing is not only technically accomplished, but very beautiful, and Sally manages to make these songs her own.’ So writes Alan Barnes about the latest ninth album from Sally Doherty who makes a debut in Scarborough. Sally’s songs slip effortlessly from gentle ballads to Brazilian bossa nova and samba, then from swing to Mexican and Cuban boleros. Stunning backing from Piero Tucci (piano and accordion), Colin Elliot (double bass) and Phil Johnson (drums). £6 (£5 in advance) 27 August General Cluster An architect, a financial adviser, a university music lecturer, an artist, an ex–educationalist and a professional bass player– all with a passion for jazz and a long experience of playing it – and you have the popular six-piece band General Cluster. Charlie Parker, Quincy Jones, Shorty Rogers and Antonio Carlos Jobim classics are on the menu and some original material by Steve Whitehead (saxes & clarinet). Although this popular band plays very tight arrangements of jazz standards and some original compositions there is a great emphasis on instrumental improvisation. Unsung Heroes 3 Tony Neary Scarborugh Jazz flourishes because of the voluntary efforts of a number of stalwarts and we’re lucky to have a butcher as a fan. Thanks for all those English Breakfast raffle prizes Tony. 2008-05-30 11:17:01 http://create.uk.net/moreinfo.php?vw_news_id=195 A ghostly Summer continues at the SJT http://create.uk.net/moreinfo.php?vw_news_id=192 The Things That Go Bump season continues at the Stephen Joseph Theatre with Snake in the Grass, a comedy from the shadows by Alan Ayckbourn. After the sudden death of their father, conscientious Annabel is keen to patch up old quarrels and make things right with eccentric younger sister, Miriam. But things are far from being right… their sunlit garden is filled with deeply buried childhood memories. When night begins to fall is it only the past which comes back to haunt them? Or something infinitely more terrifying? Snake in the Grass is Alan Ayckbourn’s 61st play and premiered at the SJT in 2002. The production will be directed by Alan Ayckbourn and stars Susie Blake, Ruth Gibson and Liza Goddard. Susie Blake played the regular character of Beverley Unwin in Coronation Street and she also starred in The Victoria Wood Show. Until recently she was starring as Madame Morrible in Wicked in the West End. She will reprise her role from the premiere of Snake in the Grass. Liza Goddard makes a welcome return to the SJT. She starred in Alan Ayckbourn’s 70th play, If I Were You in 2006. Ruth Gibson makes her debut in an Ayckbourn play. She appeared in Touch Wood at the SJT last year. Snake in the Grass opens on 5 June. The Things That Go Bump season is made up of three plays by Alan Ayckbourn about the ghosts which lurk in the dark corners of all our minds; Haunting Julia, Snake in the Grass and the premiere of Alan Ayckbourn’s 71st play, Life & Beth. Visit www.thingsthatgobump.co.uk for more information. Tickets cost between £9 and £18.50 and can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01723 370541 or via the SJT website at www.sjt.uk.com 2008-05-30 10:56:09 http://create.uk.net/moreinfo.php?vw_news_id=192 New Scarborough Arts Trail - Mapping Creativity http://create.uk.net/moreinfo.php?vw_news_id=180 Scarborough Arts Trail: Mapping Creativity is an initiative developed by the Arts & Culture Forum. It intends to put the many diverse creative spaces in Scarborough on the map. It shows the joined-up thinking and creative partnerships operating between the various creative hubs in Scarborough and is a highly visible demonstration of the wealth of cultural and artistic energy in the town. Alongside this, the trail celebrates the cultural and artistic heritage of Scarborough and links it directly with the many creative ventures happening now. Scarborough Arts Trail seeks to use cultural landmarks as a way of mapping the town so that people’s understanding and experience of the town is improved. This means leaving a positive physical impression on visitors, as well as offering them an additional cultural attraction. For residents, Scarborough Arts Trail has the potential to provide a much-needed link between the different parts of the town to help foster a positive and united self-image. Scarborough Arts Trail is a phased project. The initial phase will literally put Scarborough’s current and historic artistic and cultural endeavours on a map. We intend to commission a piece of print to signpost appropriate cultural ‘landmarks’ in the form of a map (to be made available free from Tourist Information Centres and those cultural venues included on the trail). This map will be an artwork in its own right, thus initiating the creative ‘tone’ of the project. Alongside this, given the increasing profile of digital media in Scarborough, we want to create an interactive online version which projects Scarborough Arts Trail forward so we have an almost 3-D map joining up past, present and future creativity. Scarborough Arts Trail will have a visible presence in the town through a series of artists’ interventions linked specifically to each creative venue, taking the form of a public artwork / distinctive and unique piece of signage which will enhance the trail and contribute towards improving Scarborough’s identity. The labelling / signage incorporated into the work may take the form of a piece of commissioned writing or form the basis of a local project that generates a series of personal responses from the community. This aspect of the project is intended to form part of Scarborough’s wider initiative to make Scarborough more ‘legible’ for visitors and residents. Scarborough Arts Trail will provide valuable information about Scarborough’s cultural offerings to which visitors and residents can refer. However, it is also a physical activity. It encourages people to literally move around the town, stopping off at ‘hubs’ along the way to look around, get involved or even just pop in for a coffee. The physical aspect of the trail allows for incidental experiences to intervene and shape people’s engagement with it. You may bump into a friend half way round; you may choose to dip into it on a hot summer’s day at the height of Scarborough’s holiday season or on a moody February afternoon to enjoy some peace and quiet; or you may have completed the trail 100 times, but today see something unexpected which makes you look at the trail with new eyes. To map this diversity of experience, it is envisaged that a ‘live’ annual event is included in the project. Scarborough Arts Trail: Mapping New Territory will use performance-based artists to imaginatively engage with the trail. Visitors’ experiences are enlivened and the trail is therefore ‘reawakened’ on a regular basis. It is vital that local people feel ownership of Scarborough Arts Trail and that it has the capacity to reach disadvantaged communities. Scarborough Street Arts Trail will form a major part of the Scarborough Arts Trail: Mapping Creativity event, with local community groups producing temporary artworks / signage or performance pieces to enable them to link creatively with the project. Why is the project important to us? One of the fundamental aims of the Arts & Culture Forum is to promote the arts and culture in Scarborough. So much is currently happening to make Scarborough a culturally vibrant town that Scarborough Arts Trail seeks to raise the profile of these creative activities and also to create a sense of cultural coherence. The project has the potential to engage a large audience of both Scarborough residents and visitors. Everyone can have ownership of Scarborough Arts Trail – simply by walking it, or by joining the community groups who are going to help create it. The project also offers the opportunity to commission work from practitioners engaged in a range of art forms, primarily from the region. The brief will require creative practitioners to identify where local makers / fabricators can be involved in the production of their work to support the local economy. By involving local creative practitioners in its making, the Arts & Culture Forum hopes to engender a greater sense of ownership over Scarborough’s cultural life amongst the creative community itself. What has been achieved so far? A freelance Project Developer has been appointed temporarily to raise awareness of the project, develop ideas and submit a funding application for a freelance Project Manager to deliver this project and is also in the process of applying to Awards for All for the initial development of the project (map and website). They have been in discussion with stakeholders to raise the profile of Scarborough Arts Trail and to ensure it dovetails with current Council-led initiatives.
